KITLV intends to write a proposal for a research project regarding the history of leprosy in the former Dutch colonies in Asia and America between 1800 and 1950. This will be done in cooperation with the University of Utrecht, the Free University of Amsterdam, and the University of Maastricht. Research should start in 2010.
In preparation of this proposal, we are looking for a scholar interested in participating in this project, who will investigate the perceptions of leprosy and the development of curative and preventive practices in what is now Indonesia, between 1800 and 1950.
We are looking for someone with a finished PhD, with experience in medical history, and preferable also in the history of Indonesia. Knowledge of Dutch and English is required, and knowledge of Indonesian is an advantage.
We offer a fellowship of 7,500 Euros (plus additional reimbursement of travel costs), for which we expect the beneficiary to work during three months at the Institute in order to write the first version of his/her share in the proposal. If the proposal is successful, the scholar will be employed by KITLV for a two or three-year period in order to carry out the proposed research. The end product is (part of) a monograph.
Expressions of interest can be sent to Prof. Peter Boomgaard before 1 May 2009.
