U wordt uitgenodigd voor een bijeenkomst van het Werkgezelschap Antieke Geneeskunde in Leiden op vrijdag 23 mei 2008 van 14.00–15.00 uur. Er staat deze middag een lezing op het programma, gevolgd door discussie en door demonstratie van handschriften en oude gedrukte werken uit de Bijzondere Collecties van de Universiteitsbibliotheek Leiden.

Toelichting (Dr. Roberto Lo Presti):

My communication will pivot on textual materials taken from Boerhaave's orations and in particular from the Oratio de commendando studio hippocratico. My aim is to elucidate 1) Boerhaave’s main focus and theoretical goals, 2) the argumentative and methodological strategies he adopted in order to achieve them, 3) the position that the key-concept of “tradition”, the figure of “Hippocrates”, and the notion of “Hippocratism” hold within these strategies.

Curriculum studiorum en onderzoek:

Dr. Roberto Lo Presti is holding a PhD in Classical Philology and Graeco-Roman Culture at the University of Palermo. He has studied as a Visiting PhD student at the Sorbonne under the supervision of Veronique Boudon and Jacques Jouanna; at the University of Newcastle with Philip van der Eijk. His PhD dissertation is on Theories and representations of sense perception and cognition in Hippocratic medicine. He takes part to National Research Project on "Ancient Medical texts: tradition and influence" coordinated by prof. Ivan Garofalo.
